Module Three: Mapping

For the third module the class was required to make their own websites dedicated to whatever theme they wanted. I decided to do the mapping focus. These means that I had to make a website that had to deal with mapping out someone or something’s travel. I decided to map out Joel and Ellie’s travel from the video game The Last of Us

The process of making a website was difficult. I tried to learn how to use html by using code academy. It took a while but the website was helpful. Once I figured out the basics, I used w3school to look up how to do specific tasks.

As I was working late one night tragedy struck. My website had deleted itself. Luckily now that I knew what I was doing, I was able to remake the website fairly quickly. The website was up and running again. After a few more hours of work, tragedy stuck again. The website deleted it’s again but this time I saved all my code. The digital knowledge center was able to figure out the problem and once again I was able to complete the site.

Digital Polarization

For this DGST 101 project we had to research an internet claim and trace it back to it’s source to figure out if it is true or not. My group investigated that the oldest child is the most intelligent of the siblings. We were able to find out that this is in fact true. All the articles that we were able to find pointed us towards a study done by the University of Edinburgh. We were only able to read the abstract but it was able to prove this clam.

Digital Archeology

For this DGST 101 project the class had to take apart an “obsolete” piece of technology and see if we could figure out where the pieces came from. My group took about an ihome i5.

When we opened up the speaker, we divided up the pieces to make the project easier. I took the speakers, which are located on both sides of the ihome. The speakers were pretty easy to take apart. There were four screws that help the faceplate to the base. There was nothing inside the base. The base had SDI Technologies written on the side so it was clear that’s were the base came from. The face place had more information on the back of it.

I was not able to figure out everything that was on the back of the speaker but here is what I could find:

X50FC19-00D= part number

6 omega= amount of ohms the speaker uses

6W= watts

SK 648= American Radionic Capacitors, which is the company that made the magnet

 

#Activism

The second module for that we looked at in this class deals with culture. We wanted to look at something that impacts our lives and tries to make a change. My group and I decided to look at #Activism. This module had us look at hashtags that deal with issues around the world. The most recognizable of these are #blacklivesmatter and #handsupdontshoot. For my module I decided to look as some new hashtags that are trying to make a difference.

I started with one that is new but has also been around for a little bit. I figured looking at a hashtag like #standingrock would be a good place to start because it would show me what to look for in newer hashtags that could be trying to get bigger. #standingrock follows the protester at Standing Rock. These people are fight to get the Dakota access pipeline to not be build on indigenous people’s land. The hashtag has raised awareness of this issue and made the protest bigger and even raised money for those at Standing Rock.

The second hashtag I looked at was #copwatch, this hashtag raises awareness about police brutality. Police brutality has been on America’s radar since #Ferguson. Ferguson was not the first case of police brutality but it was a wake up call for most American’s who did not realize it was a big issue. It was the use of social media that caused Ferguson to be know nation wide. Unfortunately, Ferguson was not the last case of police brutality. #copwatch keeps people posted on the new cases of police brutality and what is going on in old cases. #copwatch does not let these awful acts be swept under the rug.

The last hashtag I looked at was #bearingwitness. This is a relatively new hashtag and does not have much traction. I wanted to observe a new hashtag because I wanted to be able to go back and see if it got attention from the nation like the other hashtags would. #bearingwitness brings to light the cruel conditions that are used in the meat industry. The hashtag has videos of animals crammed in cages and being shipped to a slaughter house. The hashtag is around for a good cause but it is to new to do anything yet.

Module 1: Creativity

For my project I chose the gaming module. As I explained before I chose this module because games are one of my interest and one day I hope to be a part of the gaming industry. For this module I decided to look into the gaming world and see which companies were most successful this past year and even find out why. The first thing I did was determined what the most successful gaming companies were. I was able to find a list of the of the richest video game companies and used that to decide which companies I should look into.

According to the list, in 2016 Sony was the most successful gaming company fallowed by Microsoft and putting Nintendo in third. At first it did not make sense to me why Sony and Microsoft were so high on the list. Neither of the companies are know for making games but what they are known for, and why they are so successful, is making consoles to play games on. Once I figured out that it was the consoles that were pushing the companies to such heights, it was easy to rationalize why Sony was number one, PS4 (Sony’s main console) is the most popular out of the three main consolesused for gaming.

The next two companies to appear on this list were Sega and Activision/Blizzard. Seeing Sega was a shock because I thought it was a company that stopped making games back in 90s, but Sega was able to stay afloat and succeed the say way Activision and Blizzard did. All three companies teamed up with other companies to make something great. Saga teamed up with Nintendo to create old Sega classics for the new generations. Activision took its expertise with first person shooter, such as Call of Duty, and teamed up with the fantasy MMO producer Blizzard to create Overwatch, which ended up being one of the most popular games of 2016.

Square-Enix and Ubisoft were the last companies to appear on this list and it was not surprising to see these companies doing so well. Both companies can attribute their profits to their large and loyal fan base. These companies are both know for making video game series that have many installments, both main series and side games, that fans can not get enough of. Ubisoft are the creators of the Assassin’s Creed series, which has 17 games in the series, 9 in the main series and 8 in side games. Square-Enix’s is know for making the Final Fantasy series, which has 80 games in its series, 15 in the main series and 65 in side games.
